Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag spoke to Dean Henderson about coming back to the club in January.
The England shot stopper was adamant about going to Forest in the summer for regular first team football.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Henderson and United boss ten Hag spoke before he suffered an injury to ask about his desire to stay at Forest.
Henderson wanted to see out the season at the time, as he felt he was in a good rhythm of matches.
However, his injury means that he may not be fit until close to the end of the term.
His stance led to United securing Jack Butland on loan to replace loanee Martin Dubravka, who went back to Newcastle United.
