Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal admits having a heart-to-heart with Wayne Rooney over his midfield role.
Van Gaal has had a face-to-face with Rooney to explain his thinking about the position he wants him to play for the benefit of the team.
Asked how he had got Rooney on his side about playing in midfield, Van Gaal said: "Communicating and saying my arguments to him why he has to do that.
"And yes, also sometimes convincing that he has to do something for the team. But I don't think he ever complains about where he has to play.
"And I think he is also liking to play in midfield because he is more on the ball. So he is enjoying it more. What I know is that I cannot change him so easily from midfield to striker.
"I did it once and he was not so good. The change in a match - he doesn't like that. I take that into account.
"I look to the qualities of the player and where a player can perform better for himself. That is what I'm saying to Wayne - your contribution is bigger now when you play at right-half.
"Why? Because you cross the ball and can pass the ball better as you are on the right side. Then you can prepare overlaps for Antonio Valencia.
"And I don't think being captain burdens him. He is accepted as captain so I'm very happy.
As a manager you always have to wait as I can say he is my captain but the fellow players can say he is not good enough or his behaviour is not good enough or something like that.
"But he is fully accepted by his fellow players."
