Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he could see Edwin van der Sar smiling as he saved Nicolas Anelka's spotkick to win the Champions League.

Fergie said: "I watched the penalties again last night. When Edwin went to save, halfway across he knew he had won it.

"He was smiling, you could actually see him. That was good.

"Edwin was pretty emotional. For players like him, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, players who might relish it more than others because time, Mr Sandman, is catching up with them.

"The young ones think it's going to happen every year but it's not the case and we made the point to them."
