Everton star Ross Barkley remains a target for Manchester City. The Mail on Sunday says City pushed hard to land Barkley last summer - a £50million deal was mooted - but the player opted to stay with Everton having agreed a new deal.

Barkley, though, has struggled to sustain the exciting form he displayed last season which earned him a place in England's World Cup squad.

Everton still want to keep him but after their poor season it is clear the squad needs a shake up and the sale of 21-year-old Barkley would help them finance that.
