Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan believes his side had to show a response after their poor result at the weekend.

City were humbled by Norwich City in the Premier League, losing 3-2 away from home.

But they showed their quality in the first game of the Champions League group stages, with an impressive 3-0 away win against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Speaking about the win, in which he scored, Gundogan said to the club's official website: "We played quite well I think. The first goal away helps you but we never relaxed, kept the ball well and created a lot of chances. the result is great for us at a tough ground.

"We had at least a couple of clear chances. But the third goal killed the game and we were able to play down the last 15 minutes.
