Shaun Maloney has been named new manager of Wigan Athletic.

He has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the League One club.

The Championship side have been on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Kolo Toure following a dismal 58 days in charge of the side.

Maloney, a former Wigan player, returns to the club having lifted the FA Cup with the Latics under Roberto Martinez in 2013 and a wealth of coaching experience to his name.

Since retiring from playing in 2017 having enjoyed spells at Celtic, Aston Villa, Wigan, Chicago Fire, and Hull, Maloney returned to Scotland to coach the Celtic B team.

Maloney outlined his pride at returning to Wigan for his first managerial position, telling the club website: "I'm very proud to be back. I have amazing memories here and created some fabulous moments with teams and with fans, and I'm excited to get started.

"The feeling that I have from those times as a player is a big factor for me. I have been here previously and have always felt a great warmth from the supporters.

"I want the fans to see a team that is giving absolutely everything, fighting to get better and the supporters need to feel that. The connection is there, we just need to reawaken it."
