Malaga join Villarreal in Spanish battle for Arsenal keeper Almunia

Malaga are interested in Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia. The Daily Mail says former Real Madrid boss Manuel Pellegrini, who took over at Malaga last month, is determined to strengthen in the January transfer window as the club teeter just above the drop zone in La Liga.

No one has conceded more goals in Spain's top division this season - 28 in 14 games - and Pellegrini has made signing a new No 1 his priority.

Almunia, 33, seems to have little future at the Emirates Stadium after boss Arsene Wenger's summer pursuit of Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer.

The Spaniard has also been linked with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid as he enters the final 18 months of his contract in north London.
