Makoun and Lyon down Real Madrid

French club Lyon have defeated Spanish giants Real Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League Round of 16.

Cameroon international midfielder Jean Makoun scored a brilliant second-half goal from 25 yards to give his side the lead two minutes after the break and Madrid were unable to force an equaliser.

Lyon winger Sidney Govou was delighted with the win and said it was something nice for the fans who have seen Les Gones perform below par in French Ligue 1 so far this season.

"We have given a lot, we worked very hard together. We are very happy to have won but more because of the way we played in the first half," he told TF1.

"Tonight the fans saw that despite the ups and downs in the league we proved tonight we have a great team, great players who have enough to do beautiful things."
