Maaskant leaves Columbus Crew to take up NAC Breda job

Columbus Crew have confirmed that Robert Maaskant has left his role as assistant to return to his native Holland.

The 45-year old served as Gregg Berhalter's right-hand man during the 2014 MLS season but has now left Ohio after accepting the manager's role at Dutch Eredivisie club NAC Breda.

Maaskant returns to Breda, where he managed between 2008 and 2010, and is excited about getting back to his home country and leading the 'Pearl of the South' up the Dutch top flight standings.

"This was a difficult decision to make, but it was an opportunity in my home country that I could not pass on," Maaskant said.

"It was a pleasure being a part of this organization and I wish the club and the fans the best moving forward. The progress of the club that I saw over the course of past season in Columbus was impressive. I will look back fondly on my time with Crew SC."

Berhalter wished Maaskant all the best on his next adventure after producing such quality work during his 12 months with the Crew.

"We want to thank Robert for his contributions and his time spent in Columbus," said Berhalter.

"We're delighted to have a former member of our staff accept a head coaching role in a topflight European league. We will begin the process immediately using our network to find a suitable replacement."

NAC Breda currently sit second bottom on the 18-team Eredivisie table with just 13 points from 17 matches, six points ahead of bottom side Dordrecht.
