Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side showed 'fighting spirit' to secure a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
United eventually landed the killer blow they needed at St James' Park which came in the form of an 89th-minute effort from Ashley Young.
The goal came after a determined run from captain Wayne Rooney, which created a poor backpass from Mehdi Abeid, forcing Tim Krul into a scuffed clearance and ending in a calm finish from Young which van Gaal felt summed up United's evening.
"It was a crazy run from Wayne Rooney, a lost ball, that shows the fighting spirit in this team," he said.
"We want to win. All my changes were to win, not to hold the result."
The changes van Gaal made which led to the win included bringing off Angel Di Maria for Adnan Januzaj, Marouane Fellaini for Juan Mata and Marcos Rojo for Michael Carrick as United maintained fourth spot in the Premier League table.
