LOAN WATCH: Sunderland's Wickham scores equalizer in Sheffield Wednesday draw with Charlton

On-loan Sunderland forward Connor Wickham's second half goal rescued a point for Sheffield Wednesday in their 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic on Sunday.

Returning from a hamstring injury that saw him miss two matches, Wickham was unfortunate not to put the Owls ahead in the first half, with a number of his chances thwarted by Addicks goalkeeper Ben Alnwick.

Dale Stephens gave Charlton the lead early in the second half, only for Wickham to cancel out his goal ten minutes later.

The 20-year old Englishman benefited from some fine build-up play between Chris Maguire and Kieran Lee as the pair set Wickham up for a deserved tap in past Alnwick.

Wickham's second loan spell with Wednesday has been prolific and 6 goals from 8 appearances have the forward's confidence sky high. However, with only one match remaining in his current loan deal - a New Year's Day clash with Blackpool - Owls boss Stuart Gray reiterated to the Daily Star his intention to extend the loan to beyond the winter.

"Sunderland is happy for him to stay. The problem is you're only a phone call away to losing him. The board are in dialogue with Sunderland about keeping him. Connor wants to stay, he wants to play week in, week out," he said.
