LOAN PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: Newcastle striker Armstrong fires for Coventry

Newcastle United's Adam Armstrong produced a sensational performance on debut for Coventry City.

The 18-year-old striker scored a brace in his first game on loan for the Sky Blues as they defeated Wigan Athletic 2-0 to start the League One season in winning fashion.

The highly rated youngster lit up the pitch at Ricoh Arena, scoring goals in each half as Coventry got their season off to a perfect start, upsetting a Wigan side which has been heavily backed for promotion in League One following their relegation from the Championship.

Armstrong almost had himself a debut hat-trick, but an injury-time shot ricocheted off the post.

The confident youngster was undeterred after the game however, telling reporters: “I knew when I turned up at the stadium that it was going to be a good day. I hit the post late on which was disappointing, but I'll get my hat-trick next week."

Armstrong is on a six-month loan at the midlands club, with the spell ending on January 16. Magpies boss Steve McClaren has reportedly inserted a clause into the loan contract that prevents the teenager from playing in any Cup games, ensuring the striker won't be cup-tied to Coventry.

Such a clause could indicate that McClaren may have Armstrong in mind for first team action when he returns to the Toon later in the season.
