Jack Wilshere's loan spell with AFC Bournemouth is a very different situation to temporary spells the club has entertained in the past.
The midfielder has joined the Cherries from Arsenal as a 24-year-old on a season-long stint looking to re-establish himself as one of the best players in his position in England.
Bournemouth have in the past housed such players as Rio Ferdinand and Jermain Defoe on loan but they were at the time teenagers eager to experience first-team football, whereas Wilshere has over 170 senior matches under his belt.
"We are going down a path which we've never trodden before and there is no denying that Jack is an A-list name," said Howe.
"The club has had very successful loan deals with Rio Ferdinandand Jermain Defoe in the past, but this a totally different situation.
"From Bournemouth's perspective we would love to keep him, but I wouldn't hold out much hope of a permanent signing for us."
