The future of Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren could mean that an emergency back-up plan for Jurgen Klopp is put in place.
The Reds had planned for a quiet summer with Klopp already happy with his squad for the coming season, but AC Milan's pursuit of Lovren could change that, according to the Evening Standard.
The Italian club are on the verge of poaching Ricky Massara from AS Roma to take on the role of sporting director following Leonardo's summer departure.
And Massara is believed to be a long-term admirer of Lovren, who would only be allowed to leave Anfield should a bid of around £25million be received.
Jurgen Klopp has signalled his intent to avoid a busy transfer window following a season in which the Reds picked up 97 Premier League points and lifted the Champions League.
However, Lovren's status as a fourth-choice centre-back and the possibility of a sizeable offer from Italy could force a rethink.
