Liverpool thrashed by Napoli as Robertson claims 'we deserved this'

Liverpool were thrashed 4-1 by Napoli in their first Champions League Group A game.

Piotr Zielinski put Napoli ahead from the spot in the fifth minute after Victor Osimhen had hit the post.

Andre-Frank Anguissa then found space in the box to make it 2-0.

Last season's finalists were shellshocked as Joe Gomez struggled to deal with Osimhen up front.

It was 3-0 before half-time when Giovanni Simeone somehow got clear of Trent Alexander-Arnold before finishing past Alisson.

Virgil van Dijk came close with a header and Mohamed Salah struck straight at the goalkeeper.

But the half-time interval did nothing for the visitors as Napoli went four clear when Zielinski chipped a finish over Alisson from close range.

Luis Diaz curled in a consolation just two minutes later, but there was no dramatic comeback for Jurgen Klopp's men.

Speaking after the game, Reds fullback Andy Robertson said: "We were miles too open. You can't come to a place like this and not be compact. They were by miles the better team.

"Too many times they had spaces to run at us and cause us problems. You come away in the Champions League and you can't be wide open like that. We have to get back to basics and be compact.

"We deserve this result. The way we were wide open they found so many spaces. It felt like they had an extra man.

"You have to be ready to fight. We weren't close enough to our mate.

"We have to wake up and quickly because we can't perform like that."
