Liverpool striker Carroll bursting with pride after stunning England win

England hero Andy Carroll was full of pride with his goal in victory over Sweden.

Carroll, 23, was delighted with his header to put England in front. The £35million Liverpool striker rose to meet a pinpoint cross from skipper Steven Gerrard.

He said: "It was a great night for me and the team. I got my first goal of the tournament and we got the win.

"I went out there and did the best I could. The manager told everyone what we had to do and we stuck by the plan.

"When we went 2-1 down we had to fight back and we got the result we wanted. I gave a free-kick away on the edge and they got themselves back in it.

"They got the second as well and we were on the back foot.

"We just had to keep fighting. We did that and showed the spirit we have in the team.

"There were two tough centre-backs for Sweden. It was hard but I'm happy we got the result.

"Wayne is back in the frame and has been training well. All the lads are over the moon he is back for the next game, so is he."
