Liverpool's Lallana welcomes England competition

Adam Lallana is relishing the challenge of competing for starting spots in the England team.

The Liverpool midfielder is preparing for Saturday's Euro2016 qualifier against Slovenia at Wembley and indicated that manager Roy Hodgson's job at present is very difficult due to the depth of the Three Lions squad.

"A lot of people have come back fit," said Lallana.

"It's nice to see Theo Walcott back in the squad after such a long time out, Michael Carrick's come back into the squad, and obviously a call-up as well up front for Saido Berahino, so it's good times for England and good competition for places.

"It's what you want as a footballer, you always want competition, it gets you playing at your best and keeps you on your toes."

He added: "It's a big squad. Ross Barkley's come back into the squad as well, so it's strong. You look at the squad and it's got depth definitely, so people will be looking to grasp their chance if give one.

"We've got a friendly against Scotland next week which is a big game, so if people get chances then I'm sure they'll be looking to impress."

Former Southampton captain Lallana, who joined Liverpool in the summer, has made two appearances in England's three qualification matches thus far including a start in the 1-0 win over Estonia on October 12.
