Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri believes the club deserved their Champions League success.

Despite an indifferent performance, the Reds had the defensive solidity and clinical finishing to see off the challenge of Tottenham in the final on Saturday with a 2-0 victory.

It allowed them to secure their first trophy under Jurgen Klopp and their sixth European Cup success.

Speaking about the success, Shaqiri said after the game to reporters: "That's the quality we have. This competition, the best team in Europe wins it. So we are the best team. We are number one in Europe, so let's enjoy this time!

"Of course if we didn't win it, we'd have been very disappointed. We played such a good season, and we deserved to win at least one trophy.

"Now we won the biggest title in Europe, it's amazing. It doesn't happen every day.

"We knocked Bayern out, Barcelona, Porto. Look at the quality of our team, and we showed it again in the final. We deserved this."
