Liverpool midfielder Milner: ‘We did not show our ability’

James Milner admits Liverpool did not show what they are truly capable of in the Europa League final.

The Reds were beaten 3-1 by Sevilla in Basel on Wednesday night after leading by a goal at the break following a dominant first half.

Midfielder Milner, who captained the side in Jordan Henderson's absence, felt Jurgen Klopp's men failed to get a strong foothold in the contest early in the match or even at all in the second half which ultimately led to their downfall.

"We never started in the second half and it is devastating," Milner said on BT Sport.

"We didn't show near our ability and that is the biggest disappointment.

"We were ready, we made sure we said the right things at half time. We gave a sloppy goal away and never got back into the game."

Regarding the third goal, which was scored by Coke after a deflection off Philippe Coutinho, Milner added: "The lineman's flag went up for the third goal but the referee gave it the other way.

"It is nothing to do with the referee, it is about us. We didn't do it on the night that mattered."

Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring for the Reds with a stunning finish on 35 minutes before Kevin Gameiro levelled within 20 seconds of the restart prior to a brace from Coke which allowed Sevilla to lift their third successive Europa League trophy.
