Liverpool and Manchester City are in contact with Ajax for Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgium international has declared he plans to leave Ajax in the summer - and favours a move to England.
City boss Roberto Mancini made a personal check on Vertonghen last week for the Dutch Cup final, which has sparked talk of a £60,000-a-week contract offer being tabled to his minders.
However, Liverpool are also interested in the stopper, who is rated the best defender in Dutch football and among the best on the continent.
