Liverpool legend Alan Hansen says Andy Carroll deserved his England Euros chance.

Carroll was named in manager Roy Hodgson's squad earlier this week for the tournament in Ukraine and Poland following a commanding end to the 2011-12 season.

Hansen told liverpoolfc.tv: "Roy will have watched the Cup final and the game against Chelsea recently on television - and Andy was excellent.

"I would not want to play against Andy Carroll because when the ball is chipped into the box, he's going to win it.

"Not only is he going to win it, he's going to make life so uncomfortable for defenders that they'll start making mistakes - and we saw that recently."

Hansen added: "Andy Carroll against Chelsea at Anfield was unplayable, as he was when he came on in the Cup final.

"Everyone looks to Andy to be dominant in the air when the ball comes into the box and in his last six games, you wouldn't want to be playing against him, that's for sure."
