Liverpool legend Carragher backs Balotelli over spotkick row

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Mario Balotelli over his spotkick controversy.

Balotelli took over the spot kick duties from skipper Jordan Henderson for Liverpool's winning penalty against Besiktas.

Carragher said: "Was the Balotelli situation with the penalty tonight different to Mirallas & Baines for Everton v Qpr?

"I think it was because everyone knows Baines is the Everton taker and he started the game so there was no doubt it was wrong what Mirallas did but, Mario would never have been on the penalties because he was on the bench the same would have applied to Stevie if he was on the bench.

"It was obvious Sturridge was supposed to take it and looked a little peeved along with Henderson but at that moment the best penalty taker Lfc had on the pitch was Balotelli as we've with his spot kicks for Man City.

"So in this instance I was ok with it because the main penalty taker wasn't on the pitch in Gerrard. And also because he scored!!!!"
