Liverpool icon Rush fears for Hodgson job

Liverpool icon Ian Rush fears for the future of manager Roy Hodgson.

Champions Chelsea are on Merseyside today - and history suggests that boardroom revolutions are quickly followed by a change of manager.

Rush told the Sunday Mirror: "If you look at what has happened when other clubs have been taken over, it is the manager who always pays the price.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is the only manager I can think of who's survived the upheaval of a takeover, and the fact is he had been so successful at Manchester United, it'd have been madness to sack him.

"New owners always bring with them new ideas about how to achieve success, but Roy Hodgson is a top manager and a top person and it would be unfair to judge him on just three months at the club. He hasn't been able to bring in many new players because of the financial situation Liverpool were in and he's still getting to know the players that were already here.

"This is a results business - that is always the bottom line in football - and Roy has had a difficult start to his time at Anfield. But the Liverpool way has always been to give people a chance.

"I'd hope that Roy is given this season and next season as well to make his mark on the team and the club.

"They must back him 100 per cent - and that means giving him as much money as possible to spend in the transfer market as he sees fit. A lot has been made about Liverpool's bad start to the season, but they've produced three good results on the bounce now and are only a few wins away from fourth place."
