Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk says Manchester City striker Erling Haaland remains on course to be a world great.

Van Dijk kept Haaland quiet for yesterday's 1-0 win.

But he later told Viaplay: "He is the striker of the modern era. He just needs a little chance, and then he can get the ball into the goal. He has everything. But that's good. It's good for this era.

"There are a couple of the greatest players of all time who will be leaving in the next few years, so we need new people. He is definitely among those who could be a generational player. It's tough to play against him, but today we managed to keep him quiet.

"We have played against each other several times now, and it has always been a good duel. It was the same today. Everyone from the outside wanted to put pressure on the duel between the two of us, but it was about doing it together, preventing him from being played into good chances and being there when we needed to be there."
