Liverpool confident of getting desired result over Basel

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes his side can achieve the required result against FC Basel on Tuesday night.

The Reds host the Swiss side at Anfield in Group B of the Champions League in need of a win to progress to the next stage of Europe's premier club competition.

Liverpool currently sit third on four points, two behind Basel, but Rodgers is supremely confident they can get through to Round of 16 on the back of three matches undefeated in the Premier League.

"We are only focusing on the positive result," he said on Monday. "We see it as an opportunity rather than a threat to anything we are doing this season.

"It is a game in which we just want to stay focused on what we have to do.

"The importance of the game is there: to get through and qualify. In my time here we have had games that were deemed as 'must win' games and, more times than not, we have won them.

"We arrive into tomorrow night with great confidence that we can get the job done."

Rodgers added: "It is a cup competition and if we get through we can put it to bed for a few months, and hopefully it will give us that confidence in our league form.

"It will be a great night and it is up to us to get the job done."

Last time the two clubs met, Basel saluted 1-0 at St Jakob-Park courtesy of a 52nd-minute Marco Streller winner.
