Liverpool boss Benitez has winter market plans thwarted

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has had his January plans dashed by the club's American owners.

The News of the World says George Gillett and Tom Hicks blocked the sale of Peter Crouch and refused to buy £17million Argy Javier Mascherano.

The Americans do not want any dealings because of the uncertainty over Benitez's future.

They have admitted talking to Jurgen Klinsmann and they do not want a repeat of 2004 when Gerard Houllier signed £14m Djibril Cisse just before he was sacked.
