Marcello Lippi has urged Italy coach Antonio Conte not to go seeking battles with clubs.
Conte is said to be furious that the Lega Serie A ruled clubs involved in European competition can opt out of releasing their players for the get-together from February 9 to 11.
That means Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Inter, Fiorentina and Torino could all withhold their stars.
"I don't think a get-together is that important," ex-Italy coach Lippi told Rai Sport.
"If I can give a small suggestion, I'd say the real rapport to be stabilised is the one between the Italy boss and the club Coaches, with the objective of collaborating together consistently.
"In my view the CT should reach an agreement with his club colleagues to avoid calling the more important players for friendlies. Otherwise the same ones play non-stop."
