Leicester boss Rodgers: Selling Coutinho sparked Liverpool trophy run

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool selling Philippe Coutinho set them up for their run of silverware.

Rodgers snapped up Brazilian Coutinho for a bargain £8.5m in January 2013 from Inter Milan when he was boss of the club.

Rodgers' successor Jurgen Klopp sold the midfielder five years later to Barcelona for mega money.

Rodgers, boss at Anfield from June 2012-October 2015, analysed: “The money they gained from Philippe has enabled them to buy Van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho - three players who have transformed the team.

“They have been consistently the best team and to get the title after such a long wait, I am delighted for all the supporters.

“It is very fitting as they have been brilliant this year. They have looked like a machine. The team have so much quality with professional players who play at the highest level.

“I text Jurgen Klopp last night and Jordan Henderson who I know very well. I am delighted for them all. I also pleased for the ownership who came into football new and each year they have learned about the game and are fantastic owners who deserve that success."
