Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann once suggested that Hertha Berlin should sign Emi Martínez.
The Argentina shot stopper is in the form of his life, having assisted his country's successful World Cup campaign to great effect.
Martinez was the hero for the South American nation in the final against France, saving penalties to help his side lift the trophy after a 3-3 draw.
“He called me two years ago because he wanted a new club," Lehmann recalled about Aston Villa keeper Martinez to Sky Germany.
“I know him quite well. At that time, I was still on the Hertha [supervisory] committee, and I suggested to them: 'Look at him. He's good. You can have him for cheap.' They didn't."
Martinez is pushing to leave Villa this winter, but for a club playing European football.
