Beckham's move to America to play for LA Galaxy has raised concerns about his fitness and the level of performance he can achieve, with the MLS seen as being at a lower level of quality compared to European leagues.
"He's always kept himself fit but Friday's game is important for him," said Steve McClaren, who will not risk Shaun Wright-Phillips for the whole game, despite the winger returning to training after an ankle injury.
Frank Lampard's recent form for Chelsea has won him his recall and McClaren added: "It's a friendly, so I'm looking at different personnel.
"Gareth Barry has performed excellently in the last three games but Frank's form since he has come back from injury has been a revelation - he has played some of the best football I've seen him play."
And, although the 22-year-old Scott Carson - who is on loan at Aston Villa from Liverpool - will start, it is likely Robinson will return for the game against Croatia.
"Scott Carson has been around the squad for a long time," said the England boss.
"He had a busy summer in the Under-21 tournament and his performances for Aston Villa have been very, very good.
"The game will be an ideal opportunity for him to experience international football."
