LA Galaxy youngster Villarreal keen to develop at home first

LA Galaxy homegrown signing Jose Villarreal says he would rather develop his game at home before considering a move overseas.

This off-season, the 18-year old became the second player the Galaxy have signed through the homegrown policy, following Jack McBean, and he admits that it will be better for his development at his local professional club before trying his luck in Europe.

"Being local and staying close to family, getting that warm feeling going home and seeing my parents made me stay here," Villarreal said.

And Villarreal, who has trained with European clubs such as Brondby of Denmark and German sides Bayer Leverkusen and Kaiserslautern, says he wants to work hard and keep his head whilst remaining realistic of his first team opportunities this season.

"Just stay grounded," he added. "My family always tells me, 'Always be humble, always keep your feet on the ground and you'll succeed.'

"Getting along with the guys and being a good locker room partner and hopefully doing some stuff on the field. I'm not expecting to get that much playing time, but one day…"
