LA Galaxy star Donovan open to USA send-off despite World Cup snub

Landon Donovan admits he is positive about having one last match for the USA national team.

The LA Galaxy star will retire at the end of the current MLS season meaning his international career will also soon come to a halt.

Donovan, who has scored the most international goals (57) and recorded the most assists (58) in US soccer history, was controversially left out of the US squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Juergen Klinsmann opted to go to Brazil without the country's most decorated player but Donovan will still get the opportunity to say goodbye to the US fans when the national team plays Ecuador in East Hartford, Connecticut in a friendly on October 10.

The decision to play Donovan is the brainchild of US Soccer president Sunil Gulati and has been welcomed by MLS' all-time leading scorer and assist provider despite his apparent frosty relationship with Klinsmann.

"I thought about it for a while," Donovan said in an interview with SI.com's Grant Wahl.

"Obviously, this summer didn't leave the best taste in my mouth with everything that happened. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized this was something that I think would be really special, not only for me to feel and receive, but also my opportunity to say thank you.

"I've met so many people here in L.A. that have said, 'We've booked our flight, we got our tickets, we're going to Hartford to say goodbye to you.'

"For me that makes it special."
