Southampton boss Ronald Koeman admits trying to sign Memphis Depay last summer.

The PSV Eindhoven attacker has joined Manchester United after a spectacular season.

Koeman tried to sign Depay a year ago, but was told the youngster wanted to stay another year in Holland.

"Now we knew that we did not have to call (this season)," Koeman admits in conversation with Voetbal International.

"When Manchester United come for you, we'd have no chance. I think Depay makes a good step."
