Southampton manager Ronald Koeman was left to rue what might have been as his side were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal on Wednesday night.
The Saints finished the match at the Emirates Stadium with ten men when Toby Alderweireld was injured after they had already used all three substitutes before Alexis Sanchez pounced for a late winner.
Southampton had performed admirably earlier in proceedings and were unlucky to lose according to Koeman who only had the Alderweireld injury to blame for the defeat.
"For the first hour we were outstanding and our team gave a very good reaction after the loss last Sunday," Koeman said.
"We were unlucky with the injuries and that gave Arsenal the motivation to bring more in the last 10 minutes, pressing with 11 players against 10 players.
"Toby couldn't play on. If it's a kick on the ankle you can ask them to play on, but it was a hamstring problem. You can't continue with a hamstring injury.
"Our goalkeeper Fraser Forster was outstanding but it wasn't enough to keep a clean sheet."
The loss was third-placed Southampton's second in a row and only fourth for the season which saw them fall 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea four in arrears of second-placed Manchester City.
