Kilmarnock's Dayton hoping to give something back to mentor Hoddle

Kilmarnock winger James Dayton hopes he can perform well in this Sunday's League Cup final against Celtic.

The 23-year old believes he has been given the opportunity to play for silverware because of the guidance of former England great Glenn Hoddle who mentored him at his academy in Spain about three years ago.

Dayton was released by Crystal Palace in 2009 and found his way to the Hoddle Academy and he hopes he can repay the faith shown in him by the ex-Tottenham star.

"I would like to think Glenn might see my name on the team-sheet on Sunday and say 'well done'," he told Record Sport.

"He just put so much belief in me and delivered great coaching. My confidence went sky high after working with him.

"I came on trial to Kilmarnock and scored two in my first game. He helped me do that.

"It meant a lot to me to have Glenn believe in me as he was one of the best players of his generation.

"I remember he joined in training one day and was still unbelievable.

"He sent this one kid one way and then went so far the other way. His touch was incredible.

"I was blanking calls from his academy when I finished at Crystal Palace. "I was adamant I could get a new club but it didn't happen.

"Then Glenn called me himself and asked if I would go out. I was playing in the Conference South with Bishop's Stortford so I decided to give it a shot.

"I was only in Spain for two months but it was great for me. Glenn sat me down and told me what he wanted me to do.

"He'd have liked me to play in Spain because he thought my style would suit their football.

"But he also said he'd try and get me back to the UK, which was fine.

"He told me what to do and I worked on it every day. Then I got the chance to come to Scotland."
