Kid brother of Birmingham and Ecuador hero Christian Benitez chasing Euro deal

The younger brother of Birmingham City hero Christian Benitez is touching down in Croatia today in pursuit of a European contract.

Ronny Benitez, 22, is a free agent after his Mexican club, Delfines, went bust earlier this year and he's decided to pursue his career in Europe.

Those close to the Benitez rate Ronny ahead of Christian, a hero for Birmingham and Premier League fans, who tragically lost his life last year in Qatar. Ecuador have retired the No11 national team shirt to honour Christian's memory.

Ronny has been capped by Ecuador at every youth level from U15 to U20 and is a forward like his late brother.

The young attacker is being handled by Legacy Sports Management, where director Franjo Blazevic told tribalfootball.com: "He's as good if not better then his brother. He knows the pressure on him as both his father and brother were legends for the national team.

"He's on same path, so lets see...

"He's a great kid, has a good attitude and is focused on Europe and making the national team."

Blazevic says playing in England is a long-term ambition for Benitez, though there is already a lot of interest on the continent.

"There's some European clubs interested and he intends to make a name for himself, hoping to push for Ecuador's national team ahead of next year's Copa America."
