Kewell's Al-Gharafa debut ends in defeat after Real Madrid great Raul nets for Al-Sadd

Harry Kewell made his first appearance for Al-Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League on the weekend.

The former Leeds United, Liverpool, Galatasaray and Melbourne Victory winger came on late in the 1-0 loss to Al-Sadd with former Real Madrid star Raul netting the only goal of the game in the 65th minute.

Kewell, who departed the Victory to return to England at the end of the 2011/12 A-League season, signed with Al-Gharafa until the end of the current campaign late last week.

Kewell's Dubai-based representative Iemsagam Abdallah said the Socceroos star would need a few weeks to find his touch and hoped he returned to his best ahead of potentially signing a $1.5million one-year deal.

"Harry is looking fit and time will tell but there is an option for a full season if things go well and he is happy and the club is happy," he said.

"His aim is to get back into the Australian national team as soon as he can and to play at a third World Cup. He's been training alone in England and is very motivated.

"It's a chance now for him to get back to his best again because he hasn't played for some time and we will see how it goes. The plan is for him to come off the bench for a few weeks, and slowly work his way back into things to build up his match fitness."

Kewell has joined former Liverpool teammate Djibril Cisse, on loan from QPR, fellow Australian international Mark Bresciano and recently-departed Paris Saint-Germain winger Nene at Al-Gharafa.
