Sunderland are hoping to lure Paolo De Ceglie from Juventus to become the club's 12th signing of the summer.
With the Black Cats set to secure Greek winger Charis Mavrias from Panathinaikos, manager Paolo Di Canio is now after left-back De Ceglie who has been told he can depart Turin.
Sunderland will discuss a £2.3million fee for the former AC Siena man after missing out on Valencia's Aly Cissokho who joined Liverpool on a season-long loan.
