Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri defended Amauri after a quiet performance from the striker in last night's 1-0 defeat at Champions League rivals Chelsea.

He said: "There was pressure from both sides, so unfortunately we were never really able to give him the kind of service he likes. We gave Del Piero a couple of good balls, but it wasn't easy for Amauri to free himself from that cage."
