Juventus coach Allegri: We told Bonucci in January - 'retire or leave'

Juventus coach Max Allegri admits there's no way back for Leonardo Bonucci.

The veteran defender was stripped of the captaincy over the summer and told to find himself another club.

Bonucci remains a Juve player, though isn't being considered for selection.

Allegri said: "I'm sorry it ended like this, but we have been clear with Leo since January. The club and I spoke to him, telling him that the following year he would have to decide whether to continue elsewhere or stop.

"You are 35-36 years old, you have made Juventus history, even lame he went on the pitch. Juventus has given him a lot, he has to make an important decision not to look forward to the year, but to the future. He's young, it's normal that when a champion like him reaches the end of his career there's a fear of quitting.

"I wasn't a champion, it was easy for me, but the dynamics are the same. One has to accept it first, if he accepts later he will have a moment of boredom. He was an extraordinary player, he will remain in the history of Juventus with 500 plus matches."
