Jones used as experiment while Carrick, Townsend and Barkley turned game for England - Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson admits to experimenting slightly with his line-up for the first half of the 1-1 draw with Italy.

Hodgson started Manchester United centre-back Phil Jones as a holding midfielder at the base of a four-man diamond before pushing him back to central defence alongside Phil Jagielka.

Jones' club teammate Michael Carrick replaced fellow Red Devil Chris Smalling just before half-time, which Hodgson suggests made a difference, while Tottenham's Andros Townsend and Everton's Ross Barkley also changed things when coming on during the second half.

"The first half was nothing like the performances I'm looking for," Hodgson said.

"We experimented with Phil in the centre of midfield because we feel that, in a destroyer-type role, that could be useful on occasions in the future. But Michael made a difference, as did Ross and Andros.

They turned the game. Ross was very brave, and we needed someone to do something a bit special to get level. That's what Andros did for us."

Graziano Pelle opened the scoring for the Azzurri at the Juventus Stadium with a 29th-minute header before Townsend scored with a rocket from outside the area with just over ten minutes from time.
