Johnson admits frustration at Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough youngster Adam Johnson says he is determined to break into the first team at The Riverside, but admits his frustrations at a lack of opportunities means he will sit down and discuss his future at the club this summer.

The 20-year-old has had loan spells at Leeds and Watford in the last two seasons in an attempt to accrue experience, but he is now back on Teesside with a view to establishing himself at Boro.

"It's hard, I've only started a few games since I've come back," he told the Evening Gazette.

"It's been very frustrating for me but I've just got to get my head down and get on with it."

Johnson added that he is focused on remaining at the club to prove himself, but the England Under-21 international conceded he would have to assess his future with Boro boss Gareth Southgate at the end of the season.

"Definitely, I want to stay here and I'd love to make it here but it just isn't happening at the moment," he continued.

"Maybe I can make an impact in the final few games, but I'm hoping to sit down at the end of the season and take it from there."

Johnson added: "The gaffer is great with me and understands my concerns and how I feel. He wants me to play games but also wants me here and needs me.

"There's a lot of competition in midfield but I'm looking at the remaining games as a mini-season. It's a chance for me to get in and make an impression."
