Jaime Baez: Why Liverpool reckon this 'son of a gun' can match Luis Suarez

Jaime Baez. So is it deal done for Liverpool?

Going into this winter's January market, the 19 year-old Uruguayan's agent was convinced the Juventud striker was on his way to Liverpool.

"What is reality is that Liverpool has been following Jaime for a while," revealed Pablo Boselli last month.

"They want to find the new (Luis) Suarez and he has some characteristics of Luis, though obviously there's some big differences between the two."

A bid - understood to have been in the region of £3.3 million - was lodged by the Reds in mid-December. But with no movement since, it appears Juventud president Yamandu Costa is unimpressed.

"There are more teams interested: Valencia, Sevilla and one from Italy," continued Boselli, "but from England (Liverpool), they have already made it clear they want to have the player."

So is Baez the real deal? He certainly has the pedigree, with Dad, Henry Baez, a former Uruguay international.

"My dad helps me a lot. I never saw him play, but they say he was good," says Jaime. "We play in the same position. He says there are things that I have he didn't and some things he had that I do not, but what he gives me mainly is support.

"He's always there with advice. He always tries to help me improve."

While recognising his son's talent from a young age, Henry was determined for him to finish his education before getting serious about football.

As a junior, Jaime was well known in football circles and soon offers arrived from Danubio, Liverpool and Atlético Fénix. But he remained with locals, Canelones, until his studies were completed. That decision has since been justified, with Baez now boasting his high school certificate and despite his football success, getting his head down this past year to take some foreign language courses.

Dubbed 'Chinita' by the local press, Baez, despite his senior success in 2014, is still wide eyed when it comes to who he is now mixing with..

"Diego Lugano (former Fenerbahce and West Bromwich Albion defender) came to train with us when he was injured," recalls Baez. "To practice with him was amazing.

"He'd ask me how I was and how my training was going. He has incredible humility. He's a monster player!"

Baez continues, "There are people I come up against when playing that I still can't quite believe. Like Marcelo Zalayeta.

"Just a few years ago I was watching him on the TV playing for Juventus. I would play in a Juve shirt with his name on my back. Now we're on the same pitch! What's next...?"

Well, that 'next' will surely be Europe - and possibly Liverpool.

Baez doesn't have a problem being likened to Luis Suarez, who left the Reds in the summer for Barcelona. The 19 year-old admits Liverpool and his countryman have been a regular study during his downtime.

"Today I do pay more attention. For example, Luis Suarez is a beast.

"The truth is that he's the best. He fights for every ball, does not give up anything for lost. He is the idol of everyone in Uruguay."

Boselli, meanwhile, insists he won't push Juventud for a quick sale this month - even if Liverpool insist.

"Here we are all a team. The player, his family, the club and the agent," he says. "This is like a four-legged table, we make decisions together."

But Boselli adds, he does believe Baez is ready to make the jump.

"A player of his characteristics and the experience that he has added in recent years I think can move to Europe and make an immediate impact.

"Two to three million euros should be enough."
