Inverness inflict big defeat on Motherwell

Inverness Caledonian Thistle got the chocolates when Motherwell came to town in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday.

Terry Butcher's men produced a 3-0 result over the Steelman at Caledonian Stadium thanks to a first-half thunderbolt from Shane Sutherland before second-half strikes from Richie Foran and Alexander MacDonald.

Sutherland fired home an unstoppable left-footed shot from just inside 15 yards after being picked out by Lee Cox in the 18th minute before Foran made it 2-0 after the hour-mark from inside the six-yard box when he was found by Adam Rooney. Substitute MacDonald then wrapped up proceedings with less than 20 minutes left after coming onto the pitch 30 seconds prior to finishing with ease from a Foran cross.

The win allowed Caley to move up to sixth, within a point of Motherwell, and the performance was praised by Butcher after he watched his side bounce back from a disappointing home loss to Dundee United on Tuesday.

"I savaged them after the United game and Maurice (Malpas, Caley Thistle assistant manager) also savaged them, but we went into the dressing room after the game and gave them plenty of praise because they deserved it," he said.

"Motherwell are a good footballing side, probably better than us, but we worked hard and got the goals at the right times.

"We had a great meeting with the players following the Dundee United game. Normally you only get one or two who say something, but seven or eight said their piece and it was all really positive stuff.

"I also changed our preparation a little bit before the game and even I did something different by sitting in the stand instead of being in the dugout.

"I wanted to give the players something else to think about and it was great to see that it brought about the desired reaction."
