Husband and wife become owners of Chivas USA

Jorge Vergara and wife Angelica Fuentes have become the sole owners of Chivas USA, reports SportsPro. The couple have been shareholders in the club but upped their stake from 50 per cent by acquiring the shares belonging to brothers Antonio and Lorenzo Cue.

Vergara and Fuentes already own Chivas, the Mexican football club based in Guadalajara that was the basis for the US team. Chivas USA was formed in 2004, a joint venture between the new sole owners and the Cue brothers.

"It has been a great honour to be a part of MLS and we are very proud of the role we have played in the growth of the league," said Antonio Cue. "We have enjoyed our time with Chivas USA and we would like to thank our partners, owners and the league office."

MLS commissioner Don Garber added: "Chivas USA entered MLS in 2005 at a crucial stage for North American football. Antonio and Lorenzo Cue have been owners and greatly passionate, in addition to partners for the last eight years.

"I would like to express my eternal gratitude to the Cue family for their support and confidence in United States soccer. We hope to work closely with Jorge and Angelica as new partners of the club."

No financial details of the transaction were revealed.
