Hughton lays out how Brighton can beat Man City

Brighton boss Chris Hughton is adamant they can pull off an FA Cup shock against Manchester City.

City are chasing an unprecedented Quadruple and will face a Seagulls side still not safe from relegation at Wembley on Saturday as red-hot favourites to reach next month's FA Cup Final.

But Hughton says: “The one thing we've always stressed to the players going through the rounds is that there are some very good players who don't have the opportunity to get to a semi. They have to make the most of it and put in a performance to be proud of.

"The message to the players will be to give everything and come away with pride in their performance.

“We won't have to motivate anybody to run harder and to try to do as well as they can. Motivation won't be a problem. The problem will be the quality we are up against and what will be the best opportunity to stay in the game.

“At this moment they [City] are one of, if not the best, team in the world with an array of players that are top players, technically gifted but also fit and motivated. That's why they are going for four trophies. That makes the challenge even bigger.

“It's foolish to go toe to toe and I'm not embarrassed to say you have to try to contain them. If you play an open game, they have too many options and too many strategies to open you up — starting with a goalkeeper who can play a pass from 70 yards. We have to stay in the game.

“We want to start well, because the last thing you need is to be out of the game very quickly.

“If we are defeatist from the moment we walk on the pitch, there's only one outcome. We have to be positive about our chances."
