West Bromwich Albion boss Roy Hodgson feels they may have unearthed the next Chris Smalling.
Hodgson signed Smalling for Fulham before he was sold to Manchester United.
He now sees similarities in England U21 defender Craig Dawson: "Phil Jones and Chris have used their experiences at international level to their advantage.
"I'm a great believer in international football.
"With respect though, playing Under-21 matches is not comparable to playing Manchester United. I do have to bear that in mind, although I'm not playing down the quality of his achievement.
"I have to make the decision as to when the right time is to put him in the team or, indeed, if he is better than what I have. I have a Sweden, Romanian and Northern Ireland internationals here. It's not as if he is competing against people who have not also achieved."
