Hodgson assures Arsenal midfielder Wilshere over England status

England coach Roy Hodgson has assured Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere of his place in the national team setup.

England are starting life without midfield stalwarts Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Hodgson says: "For sure there is an opportunity for Jack.

"That doesn't just apply to him - he doesn't have to shoulder all of that responsibility alone.

"But he's been on the radar for a long time. He broke on to the scene long before I came along, but when I came along he wasn't available because of long-term injuries.

"He has been very unlucky with injuries. It has only been in the last six months that he could be selected.

"It's been very encouraging for me to see him playing pain-free and without fitness issues.

"I went to Arsenal the other night and saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain playing well down the right and Jack playing well down the middle.

"So I have high hopes of people like Jack. It leads you to believe and hope he could do the same in an England shirt."
