Higginbotham: Would LvG select Smalling ahead of Shawcross at Man Utd?

Former Manchester United and Stoke City defender Danny Higginbotham is baffled by the England snub for Ryan Shawcross.

Higginbotham wrote in The Sentinel: "If Ryan Shawcross had been in the Manchester United squad this season, would Louis van Gaal be picking him ahead of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones?

"On form, I'm pretty sure he would - and that's what makes it so baffling why Shawcross is not in Roy Hodgson's England set-up to take on Slovenia tomorrow.

"Smalling and Jones have plenty of ability, but international squads should be picked on the here and now."
