HeroISL: Chennaiyin and Pune share the spoils

Chennaiyin FC and FC Pune City could not be separated in Monday's Hero Indian Super League fixture.

The two clubs remained second and third respectively on the inaugural ISL table after playing out an exciting 1-1 draw at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Stadium in Pune.

Franco Colomba's Pune side opened the scoring inside ten minutes when Greek veteran Kostas Katsouranis raced onto a lovely cross from Israil Gurung before firing home a superb half-volley.

Marco Materazzi's Chennai outfit stepped it up after conceding and almost levelled when the player-coach was brought down in the area only for the league's leading scorer Elano to blast his penalty off the upright.

Brazilian midfielder Elano then hit the crossbar with a free-kick before Chennaiyin finally equalised through Colombian forward Stiven Mendoza who combined with Balwant Singh before slotting home in the 58th minute.

The draw allowed Chennaiyin to remain in second spot on the table on 12 points, which has them equal with leaders Atletico de Kolkat but behind on goal difference, while Pune are a point behind in third.

Chennaiyin next take on Atletico in Kolkata on November 14 for the chance to go outright top as Pune prepare for the November 15 clash with fifth-placed NorthEast United FC in Guwahati.
